Plastics and Burr Ridge Build Gardens on Earth Day to Spark Aliveness

The project was top secret, and the objective was simple: to surprise our employees with gardens at the office. The goal is part of an initiative to spread aliveness within our walls.

To keep the garden a surprise, Dick Curtain, Tuthill Clearwater’s president asked for a couple volunteers— Linda Aldridge and Carol Cobb. Carol is a gardener at heart and Linda wanted to lend a helping hand.

On Earth Day, April 22, the employees installed garden boxes at Tuthill Clearwater and at Tuthill Burr Ridge’s corporate office.

Clearwater’s maintenance technicians, Dan Collins and Ron Dwyer built the boxes and cut the sign. Linda and Carol shopped, shoveled, planted and watered. Linda painted the sign with images of hearts, heads and hands.

At Burr Ridge, IL, Vito Pellicano and Erica Magda installed the garden boxes. Danton Jany in maintenance secured the dirt, mulch and installed fencing with help from his nephew and a friend. Vito’s mom designed the sign and hand painted it herself to read, “From Our Hearts, To Our Heads, To Our Hands.”

Monday morning, the gardens were revealed to all. “What a wonderful spot to see when we drive into work everyday,” Paula said of the Clearwater garden. “We expect this to be ongoing and growing with an invitation to all to bring in plants and seed and add to the boxes,” she added.

“Dick was blown away with [everyone’s] wonderful showing of aliveness. They took the idea and ran with it,” Paula Spencer said.

At their Autism fundraiser event, Clearwater offered blue flowered plants for sale to put into the garden to raise money for F.A.C.E. Autism Center.

Vito led this garden initiative as part of an ongoing effort to spark aliveness and wake the world around us. “I am very excited to see what comes from this. My hope is that it will spark spring time aliveness!” he said.

“We are eager to witness what grows as people work together to bring these gardens to life,” Chad Gabriel said. “When we come alive, the world comes along!”
